Multi-Spindle Drilling: Hole Pattern and Fixture Requirements

Prepare the hole coordinates, tool clearances and workholding information needed to assess a multi-spindle drilling arrangement.

Multi-spindle drilling and tapping machine platform

The short answer

A multi-spindle assessment needs the complete hole pattern and a workable fixture arrangement. Hole count alone is insufficient: spacing, machining depth, tool access, material and part location must be reviewed together before the head layout is confirmed.

Compare simultaneous drilling, traverse layouts and custom configurations against your complete hole pattern.

Show the full pattern with a common reference

Send a dimensioned drawing with hole coordinates or unambiguous spacing from the part references. Identify hole diameter, depth and tolerance individually where they differ. Mark which holes require drilling, which require tapping and which arrive already finished. A photograph of several holes is useful context but cannot define a spindle layout.

Include the outside dimensions, nearby ribs, recesses and raised features. The machining head must be assessed against the surrounding geometry, not only the hole centers. If different part versions share some holes, provide separate drawings and a clear list of differences so the proposed common arrangement can be reviewed.

Illustrative coordinate example only: assume four identical through-hole centers on a flat part, measured in millimeters from the same stated X/Y origin and viewed from the machining side. A=(0,0), B=(30,0), C=(0,20) and D=(30,20). This defines a rectangular pattern; it does not specify a suitable head, holder diameter, fixture or machining capability. The production drawing must separately state hole sizes, tolerances and its datum scheme.

In this example, horizontal center distance is 30 mm and vertical center distance is 20 mm. These are distances between axes, not clear gaps between holder bodies. The review needs the actual outside envelopes of adjacent holders, tool projections, clamp positions and motion paths. A supplier's minimum spindle-center specification alone does not prove that the installed tooling and fixture clear one another.

Review the head and fixture as one arrangement

The supplier should check the proposed tool positions alongside the clamps, locating features and machining approach. Ask for a layout review before treating the spindle count as settled. The questions below identify information that is often missing from an early machine inquiry.

Separate simultaneous machining from a full sequence

A pattern may contain holes with different diameters, depths or thread requirements. Ask which features the proposed head processes together and which need another position or operation. Do not assume that every visible spindle performs every required step, or that a multi-spindle description includes drilling and tapping in one uninterrupted cycle.

Prepare a simple operation list from incoming blank to finished part. Identify any chamfering, cleaning or inspection performed elsewhere. This keeps the equipment quotation aligned with the factory process and makes it possible to compare a fixed-position platform with traverse or indexed alternatives.

Make loading and checking part of the fixture discussion

Explain how the workpiece is handled: by an operator, a dedicated feeder or another system. Show the intended loading orientation and any difficulty distinguishing the correct side. Ask how the fixture is accessed for loading, cleaning, tool changes and checking a first-off part after setup.

Where hole relationships are critical, identify the drawing requirements and proposed inspection method. Request confirmation of how the part is located during machining. A multi-spindle layout does not, by itself, prove a particular dimensional result; the application and acceptance evidence must establish that result.

Choose the platform after the layout review

The BX-20015 is a catalog starting point for repeated hole or thread patterns. A servo-traverse arrangement may be considered when the process requires controlled movement between positions. Custom multi-spindle and gantry layouts provide another route when the workpiece or machining arrangement needs a dedicated assessment.

Pause selection when hole spacing, access or workholding remains unresolved. A higher spindle count is not a complete purchasing objective. The useful proposal explains which features are completed, how the workpiece is held, what remains outside the machine and how the result will be checked using the intended part.

Prepare your part information

  • Complete drawing with hole coordinates and overall dimensions
  • Hole and thread sizes, depths and tolerances
  • Material and incoming blank condition
  • Permitted locating and clamping surfaces
  • Part variants, loading preference and finished-output target

Common questions

Can any hole pattern use a multi-spindle head?

Do not assume this from hole count. Submit the spacing, tooling requirements and surrounding geometry so the head arrangement and access can be assessed.

Can different hole diameters be included?

List each diameter and depth on the drawing. The supplier must review the tooling and proposed operation grouping before confirming an arrangement.

Can an existing fixture be reused?

Provide its drawing or photographs, mounting details and locating scheme. Reuse depends on the proposed platform, head access and loading arrangement and must be confirmed.
